フィヨルドランド国立公園(Livingstone Range)

Routeburn TrackのKey Summitは日帰りハイキングの場所として有名である。

その南側にLivingstone Rangeと呼ばれるエリアがある。稜線上は穏やかな草原の丘が広がり、その中に大小の池塘が存在する綺麗な場所だ。稜線の両側の斜面は氷食の影響で急峻になっており一気に谷底まで落ちこんでいる。西側の谷底にLake Gunn, Lake Fergus,東側の谷底にGreenstone River, Lake Mckelarを見下ろし、それぞれの背後には2000m級の岩山が聳えている。

今回はKey Summitから入山して1543Pに登頂し、1362Pから北東に伸びる稜線をMckellar Hut まで下って、Greenstone Track経由で下山した。

On the south side of Key Summit, a popular destination for dayhikers, lies a long undulating hill covered with tussock and dotted with small tarns. This beautiful area is called Livingstone Range, and makes for a good side trip from Routeburn and Greenstone Track. From there, you can look down on Lake Gunn and Lake Fergus on the west side, Greenstone River and Lake Mckelar on the east side, and behind each of them dominate lofty mountains about 2000m high.

This time, I started from Key Summit, walked all the way south to pt1543, and descended along the ridge heading northeast from pt1362 to the Greenstone riverbed.

NZ富士タラナキ山(Mt.Taranaki)

ニュージーランド北島第二の高峰タラナキ山(2518m)に登頂した記録。タラナキ山はタスマン海に面した円錐形の成層火山であり、その山容は富士山に相似している。「ラストサムライ」のロケ地として使われたことで日本でもよく知られている。

Mt. Taranaki (2,518m) is the second highest mountain on the North Island of New Zealand. It is a cone-shaped, stratovolcano and looks quite like Mt. Fuji in Japan. Mt. Taranaki is well-known in Japan, too, because the region around this mountain was chosen as the location for the famous American film "The Last Samurai", which depicted the spirit of Japanese samurai swordsmen in the era of modernization.

トンガリロ国立公園(Tongariro Northern Circuit)

世界の山世界の山-Mountains in NZ

Tongariro National Parkの有名なトレイルであるTongariro Northern Circuitを歩いた記録。2日目の天気が思わしくなく、Mt.NgauruhoeとMt.Tongariroの登頂を諦めざるを得なかったのは残念。

Tongariro National Park is New Zealand's oldest national park and is the first in the world to be designated as a UNESCO dual world heritage site, which means this place has great significance both naturally and culturally. This area is known for its moon-like landscape, which was created by volcanic activity and erosion by glaciers.

The track I walked is the Tongariro Northern Circuit. This route makes a loop around three famous volcanoes – Mt. Ruapehu, Mt Nagauruhoe and Mt. Tongariro – and is listed as one of the seven Great Walks in NZ.

It's indeed regrettable that I couldn't climb Mt. Nagauruhoe and Mt. Tongariro because of the terrible weather on the second day, but the vast expanse of rugged terrain was truly amazing, and it was well worth the visit.

NZ登山の準備について(Preparation for tramping in NZ)

ニュージーランドで山に行くと言うと、大抵の人が思い浮かべるのは世界的に有名な「ミルフォードトラック」「ルートバーントラック」「ケプラートラック」などであろうか。だが、これらは広大なニュージーランドの山岳の中のほんの一部にすぎない。

今回の記事は、日本で山に登る時と同じように自分で計画を立て、自分で地図を準備し、自分で情報を収集して計画書を作り山に登るという時の為に必要な事項をまとめたものである。

Speaking of trekking in NZ, most people would think of world-famous Great Walks, such as Milford Track, Routeburn Track, and Keplar Track. Although these tracks are truly beautiful, they are only a small part of vast mountainous ranges in NZ.

This time, I would like to enjoy tramping (trekking or hiking is called tramping in NZ and it's a concept unique to NZ) off the beaten track just as I enjoy it in Japan, planning a route, preparing maps and collecting necessary information on my own.

Today, I will introduce the information I have got so far.
